Student Spaces for Art and Collaboration
Curatorial and Exhibition Programs
Student Spaces for Art and Collaboration is comprised of student-centered galleries, performance venues and ShopColumbia, an entrepreneurial space for students to sell their work. These spaces serve as hubs for social, educational and cultural activities for Columbia students and the broader Chicago community. As an extension of the classroom,
Student Spaces for Art and Collaboration Curatorial incorporates the College’s curricula by building programs with academic departments providing opportunities to students such as showcasing their work through exhibitions, concert-level performances, & learn the ins-and-outs of becoming a professional artist.
Through civic engagement, Student Spaces for Art and Collaboration connects students and the college to local, national and international partners to provide experiential learning and professional development through collaboration. The spaces present innovative and accessible programs and opportunities for students, the college and beyond.

Between Here and There explores the transitional spaces and moments that exist between two points, the journey of moving from one place to another, and the experiences that shape our understanding of these transitions. Artists are invited to reflect on the in-between states of existence—whether physical, emotional, or metaphorical.
Between Here and There invites all students to submit works that explore their interpretations of this theme.

Invited artists of all mediums from all areas of study are encouraged to apply,
-Each artist is allowed to submit up to 5 works.
-No size limitations per piece, but please limit the combined size of submitted work to under 10 sq ft.
-Painting, drawing, photography, video, music, installation, and experimental work is all welcome
Deadline to submit is 11:59pm November 27th. Works can be work in progress when submitted but MUST be complete before install. Selected works will be exhibited in mid to late February.

Located on the 1st floor of 623 S Wabash Ave., Hokin Gallery provides an opportunity for Columbia College Chicago's students to exhibit their work. Students must be enrolled during the run of the exhibition.
Hokin Gallery Spring 2025 Exhibition Program Student Spaces for Art and Collaboration (formerly DEPS) offers students at Columbia College Chicago the opportunity to exhibit their art within a gallery setting at the Hokin Gallery on Columbia’s campus. Students within any field of study are open to submit their work.
Hokin Gallery will book 1 exhibition proposal for the Spring 2025 semester, however applications will also be considered for later in the academic year. If selected, all participants must prepared to be available to install and deinstall their work during the exhibit period. All participants must be enrolled at the time of the exhibit run.
Hokin Gallery is accepting proposals for 3-5 person exhibitions.
All exhibit proposals will be reviewed by a proposal review committee that will take a vote on a final proposal for the Spring semester and runner up proposals that may be booked for later.
In addition to the Hokin Gallery, Student Spaces for Art and Collaboration manages the Makerspace in the Student Center, Shop Columbia and several event spaces, both can be booked for events by students. Utilizing these spaces is not a requuirement, however Priority may be given to exhibition proposals that offer programming in conjunction with an exhibit in Hokin Gallery.
Examples for how Student Spaces for Art and Collaboration spaces may be used in conjunction with a Hokin Gallery exhibit:
Example 1. An exhibit by several printmakers presented in Hokin Gallery with extra print editions available for sale in Shop Columbia. Additionally, an artist talk with several of the printmakers is held in Haus for a 45 minute event.
Example 2. An exhibit by several artists is held in Hokin Gallery, 1 week after the exhibit is open to the public the artists hold a response workshop in Makerspace during which visitors of the exhibit are asked to create a work of art in response to the subject matter of the exhibit by utilizing equipment available in Makerspace.

How to Apply
The following items are required, applications that do not include these items will be rejected. Applications must be submitted before December 2, 2024
- Application should be submitted by a person who will act as the main contact/organizer from the group
- Include contact information of applicants and names of contributors, including email and phone.
- Include expected graduation date (all artists must be actively enrolled at Columbia during their exhibit)
- Include your (and other exhibiting artists) major/area of study at Columbia
- Submit 7-15 images, or a 2-3-minute video of the proposed work to be exhibited
- Submitted image information: title of work, date of creation, materials/process, name of creator (whether work was made solo or through collaborative effort)
- A general floor plan for the exhibit which shows how the work will be placed in the gallery. (placement of the works is flexible, we need to know that you have enough work that supports the exhibit concept)
- Brief description of the proposed exhibition that gives Hokin Gallery a clear overview of the goal and meaning of your work, should be at least 2 to 3 paragraphs.
Eligibility
- Must be a current Columbia student at the time of the application and during the exhibit
- Exhibit proposals must utilize the entire gallery.
- Expected graduation date (all artists must be actively enrolled at Columbia during their exhibit)

Reflection refers to casting light back and forth, bouncing images between surfaces. It can convey the duality of introspection and observation, inner contemplation, or external mirroring. How do we reflect our interpretation of reality and imagination? Or the passage of time and personal growth?
Reflections invites all students to submit works that explore their interpretations of Reflections, whether through its literal definition or concept.

Applications are due on or before 10 PM, Sunday, November 10 2024. Students will be notified by November 15 of their acceptance.
Selected works will be exhibited Dec 5, 2024- January 31, 2025.
Accepted artists must be available to drop off/install their artwork on December 2, 3, 4 between the hours of 9:30AM and 3:00PM.

Artwork drop off you must deliver all elements of your artwork to the gallery between the hours of 9:30am-3pm unless you are contacted with other instructions. Artwork not delivered on time, will not be included in the exhibition!
★Your delivery must meet the following requirements. If any of these requirements are missing, your delivery will not be accepted into the exhibition:
- Artwork must be ready to hang, all hardware must be assembled/included.
- The artwork must be exactly as described in your proposal (works not matching your submission will not be accepted, unless you have previously spoken to DEPS and confirmed such changes)
- Artwork must include detailed installation instructions
- Artwork and any artwork packaging must be labeled with your name and contact information and the title of the work
- If your work needs to be “turned on” in some way, you must include operating instructions.

Artwork will be installed by the artist. Gallery staff can assist if requested. Gallery staff may reach out to schedule a specific installation time. The exhibit curator will choose the location of your artwork in the gallery.

Deinstallation: You will be contacted with a specific de-installation date. You are responsible for removing your artwork from the gallery during one of these dates. Anything remaining after Feb 3 will be discarded.
